If you stuck it out for two hours of ABC’s Bachelor Pad, chances are you hung around for at least 30 seconds of the season premiere of Dating in the Dark. You remember this show, right? New cast each episode; three guys and three girls feel around in the darkness and occasionally converse to see if they like each other’s “personalities”? No? That’s probably for the best. This show is a total crapfest that I’m thinking can best be recapped via pictures. Ironic, don’t you think? Because they’re in the dark.

Natasha wins this week’s prestigious Best Euphemism for ‘Unemployed’ award.

Joey, 31, is the villain of the episode. He’s just sitting there and you already hate him, especially his most prized possession: his hair. Joey thinks his hair looks awesome.

Kym, 27, should consider washing her hair. Warning, guys: Kym only likes men with perfect teeth! And yet these are her teeth.

By the way, the interior decoration of this house is insane. Here’s host Rossi Morreale explaining this “most unusual dating experiment.” Marvel at the strange orange pineapple/container behind him. A true hidden gem!

Hideous wall art for a hideous “man.”

Seriously what is going on with the decor? You know we can see this, right, ABC? Not every scene occurs in the dark. Show some respect.

Finally! They’re dating in the dark. The introductions are as awkward as they seem.

Ewwwwwwwwwwww. Joey: “I did the Ray Charles wrist check so I could see if they were thin or they were heavy. I felt Natasha’s wrist and felt it was plump, and I was just kind of turned off, for me.”

The anti-plump crusade continues as Joey checks Natasha’s waist for extra, or rather any body fat during the first few seconds of their one-on-one date.

And she’s delighted! “I don’t think Joey’s a bad guy,” says Natasha the fatty. “I think it shows that he’s a bit more clueless than rude, and I just think that’s endearing.”

Joey demonstrates the dimensions of Natasha’s grotesque “inner tube” of flesh for the other two guys. Tragically for viewers, he is not about to drown.

To add insult to injury, Natasha’s best friend, Tatiana, reveals in a video diary that Natasha is a vegetarian for ethical reasons! “No wayyyyy. No, no, no.” Joey is devastated. A “fat” vegetarian, huh? I mean what are the chances?

Natasha’s one-on-one date with Dave, the 26-year-old PR guy, went a bit better. Here she is overdoing it after Dave unleashed his secret weapon — his sense of humor — by making a hilarious joke. Natasha said she used to be “on keys” in her school band, and Dave shot back, “Which means ‘keyboard,’ right? YOU DIDN’T JUST JINGLE KEYS?”

No, silly! I didn’t just jingle keys! Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha I’m about to fall over!

Meanwhile, tall Kym makes the best zombie of the group. “Oh God,” she mutters in disgust upon realizing Joey is five inches shorter than her.

Natasha overacts AGAIN upon hearing Rossi’s big news that they would now get to view the results of the compatibility tests. “Perfect!” she squeals. But it’s not.

Kym delivers the most sensible line of the night: “Look how stupid our names look together.”

Storm is zombie Kym’s knight in shiny gold hoop earring armor at the start of their compatibility date. Uh oh. Are man-jewels a deal breaker, ladies?

…you deceptive, nice-personality-having jackass.

Yeah, Joey! Gotta booze it up for your compatibility date with a giant flotation device, bro.

Joey and Natasha’s compatibility date is just more of the same. This time he feels her entire midsection to make sure his snap judgment that she was huge had been correct. “Natasha, will you please stand up so I can get an idea of your full figure?”

And she’s okay with it! “I’ll be honest, I thought you were a little thicker than that,” Joey admits. But he’s still not sure and embarks on a thorough belly check. “You’re feeling my tummy?” she asks, bewildered. “Abso-LUTE-ly!” he announces, proud as can be. I’m amazed she’s still in the room.

After Joey describes his painful experience with an ex-girlfriend who “blew up like a tick” and assured Natasha that it was okay if she’d ever been heavy before as long as bulimia or the gym will keep her fit for the long run, it slowly begins to dawn on Natasha that Joey is a huge asshole.

There it is.

One of Natasha’s eyes takes a bit longer to catch up.

Jerk.

Yay! Kym decided to look past Storm’s earring (or in this case, screw her eyes shut) and meet him on the balcony of romantic success. They’re dating in the daylight!

But DRAMA! Natasha and Jessica both chose Dave, and he ended up requesting a daylight dating experience with Jessica. The two looked so much alike that I’m convinced there’s a 50 percent chance Dave meant to choose the other one. Here’s Jessica sticking it to that loser Natasha.

F— me gently with a chainsaw, Veronica!

I almost prefer this Natasha reaction shot from earlier, right after Jessica emerged from her compatibility date with Dave to announce “I’m really interested in him.”

And then Jessica fell. (Not really.)

The end.

Today’s post will be about the World Press Photo exhibition and some of the behind the scene details.

The World Press Photo 10 exhibition will visit more than 100 cities this year. Four will be in Canada.

Each city that you see listed on the World Press Photo Exhibition calendar page works independently of one another.

A sponsor pays a fee to World Press Photo to have the exhibit in their city. The agreement can be yearly or on a three-year contract.

I don’t think this was done intentionally, but as it stands, the World Press Photo will be in Canada for 4 consecutive months, August through to November. The sponsor has the opportunity to select their dates as long as the slots are available. The exhibit must be on display for 3 weeks.

There are 10 sets of the exhibition that travel to the venues. Multiple exhibitions are frequently shown at the same time around the world. As I sit with the Toronto exhibition each year (more about this in tomorrow’s post) many people tell me that they have seen it in another city, another country. They will also frequently comment on the venue in the other city, and make comparisons. I’m not quite sure how World Press Photo manages this, but even looking at the Canadian venues, you can see that each is quite unique. A traditional gallery space is seldom used.

The exhibit is shipped to the venue in 5 crates that includes the stands and images. An exhibition project manager from WPPh will then arrive to oversee the exhibition set-up. This is all part of the fee.

I remember when I first became involved with the exhibition and learned about the project managers, I thought what a wonderful job it would be travelling the world setting-up the exhibition. Let me tell you that they work extremely hard. They usually fly in the day before set-up, and then have to co-ordinate the display to fit each unique space…not an easy task. Each sponsor is responsible for obtaining assistance for the actual installation work.

The project manager then speaks at and supports sponsors at the exhibition launch, as well as handle media requests. Each is fluent in English or French, but it is never their first language. All of this is accomplished in a positive and upbeat manner as they battle jet lag. From arrival to departure it is usually four days.

In the 8 years the exhibition has been in Toronto I have worked with 7 different project managers. Each and everyone has been nothing but a first-class professional, and I’m sure all the other organizers would say the same. What I take away most from the project managers, beyond their ability to handle jet lag, is the respect and integrity each brings to the pictures they represent.

As the exhibition has a unique sponsor in each city, the sponsor can manage the exhibition as they like, meaning they can charge a fee, or offer supplementary events. Beyond the exhibition, WPPh has no additional requests.

Some venues are held in private buildings, while others are in public venues. Ottawa and Toronto venues would be considered public, as they both show the exhibit free of charge. Montreal and Chicoutimi venues are private and both will have an admittance fee.

In Montreal, the Just For Laughs venue will also house additional exhibitions for the admittance fee. The Montreal details are on the site, but not all 2010 details are presently listed.

In Chicoutimi, the exhibition will be part of a new and exciting photojournalism festival, Zoom Photo Festival. English text will be posted shortly, in the meantime here is the Google translation.

This festival will include events and more than 10 exhibitions with details on the site.

A final note for today, and a reference to my post yesterday regarding American media reaction to 9/11. From the beginning of my involvement with WPPh in 2001, I have been disappointed, although I should not be surprised, at how infrequently US venues appear on the calendar. This year is no exception, and as of today, the only US venue listed is the United Nations in New York. It is unfortunate.

Tomorrow – Trials and Tribulations of Hosting World Press Photo in a Public Venue

Mixxers, quite honestly some of you are starting to piss me off. I know Mixx is not MY site, but I like to hang out there and try to help keep the BS to a minimum.  I am still faced with the issue of “Photo” section abuse. Guys, cut the crap and keep the photo section clean. It is not a section for you to abuse.

If you have a story you want to submit, put it in the story section and insert a thumbnail, NOT THE PHOTO SECTION! It is getting stupid and out of hand and I will report them all day. And yes Mixxers, I put THIS post in the “Photo” section to make a point!

Have fun and Happy Mixxing!

Check out some laptop reviews from around the web. Today’s laptop reviews are for the MSI Wind U160 netbook, ASUS U30Jc ultra-portable laptop and the Toshiba Portege R705 ultra-portable.

In the past a thin and light notebook meant that you had to make a compromise in battery life, performance, form factor, or price. There is no better example of this than the netbook, where performance takes a back seat to great battery life and very low pricing. The problem is that not everyone enjoys the sluggish performance, small… read full review.

Claudia Schiffer and Karl Lagerfeld Are Attacked by Fashion Editor of Black Lifestyle Magazine for Photo of Schiffer, Blacked-Up

July 14th, 2010 by claudegraham1983

I made some shots in the last days - please tell me if you like them:

Esslingen Altstadt, Katzen by Finvara

Claudia Schiffer has been attacked for offending black people after posing on a magazine cover made up as a black woman. The 39-year-old German supermodel wore black foundation and an afro-style wig in the photograph taken by fashion designer and photographer Karl Lagerfeld.

Lagerfeld had Schiffer made up as a black women in one of six photographs he took while putting together an advertising campaign for the vintage champagne Dom Perignon. The photos were published by German fashion magazine Stern Fotografie when it celebrated its 60th anniversary.

Accusations against Schiffer and Lagerfeld followed from Shevelle Rhule, the fashion editor of a London black lifestyle magazine, Pride. Ms Rhule said:

“It shows poor taste and it's offensive. There are not enough women of colour featured in mainstream magazines. This just suggests you can counteract the problem by using white models. I don't believe they deliberately set out to offend. They obviously see it as being arty and feel that they are pushing boundaries. But clearly no thought has been given to the history behind what they have done and the comparisons it draws with minstrel shows.”

To which I would reply: 'Shevelle, lighten up'. Her comment is the kind that perpetuates raw nerves about race and creates a path of spikey eggshells for people, black and white, to walk on. Society doesn't need race relations zealots, quangocrats or Pride fashion editors lecturing designers (or filmmakers or writers or rap singers…) on what they can or can't do. It's small-minded. Already an online magazine has responded to the photos with conformist knee-jerk political correctness by saying one of the other photos, of Schiffer as an Asian, is “just wrong”, scolding that Lagerfeld should have used more than one model in the interests of racial diversity.

Fashion, like fiction and film and other creative industries, should be free to play with any images it chooses. Did Ms Rhule also take offence at white French actor Gerard Depardieu recently playing mixed-race Alexander Dumas (using black make-up)? Or Eddie Murphy impersonating a white (jewish) person? Or black British actor Adrian Lester who played the white Danish prince, Hamlet? Or the black actor, David Oyelowo, who played white English king Henry VI?

Would she criticise images of Bob Dylan or the Rolling Stones dressed up as women? How about pantomime dames, women actors dressed as men, Eddie Izzard in frock and lipstick, comedians pretending to be children…?

As soon as you get into determining whether blacks can play whites and women can play men but not the other way round, you're proscribing the creative process and engaging in censorship. Clamping down on the arts in that way (even commercial arts like advertising) is as restricting as squashing free speech.

As for Rhule's comment that Lagerfeld and Schiffer were suggesting the photograph of a 'black' Schiffer would substitute for using black models in mainstream magazines - that's just plain foolish. Rhule then seems to have chucked minstrels into the discussion just for shock value.

In fact the photo was one of a series of six in which Lagerfeld was playing with Schiffer's image. Another showed her as a secretary, a third as an Asian woman. In a fourth she was dressed and made up as eighteenth century French queen, Marie Antoinette and in a fifth she was androgynous. The fashion shoot theme was fantasy and imagination. Lagerfeld wanted to play with Schiffer's face and Shiffer's image. He didn't want to use other models. He wasn't trying to portraying racial diversity - he was portraying imaginary Claudia Schiffers. And has every right to.

A spokesman for Lagerfeld responded to Rhule's criticism, saying she was taking them out of context: “The images were designed to reflect different men's fantasies. The pictures were not intended to offend, they were done very creatively and are some of Karl Lagerfeld's favourite images of Claudia. People should not jump to conclusions.”

Yet there are many people with vested interests in Britain and other liberal democracies who make a good living from jumping to conclusions and playing the race card in cases which can only trivialise genuine instances of racism. Political correctness about race and ethnicity has battened onto society like a barnacle on a boat. It would be a democratic step forward if those who have a professional interest in taking offence at 'racism' and other -isms would pick their battles more wisely.

It would also be good if the race relations industry ditched the term “people of colour”. What is it supposed to indicate?! What colour? Black? Dark brown? Sienna? All those and more? Does it imply that white people - with their variously pink, peachy, creamy, olive-toned, ugly red, bluey-white, brown or orangey skin - have no colour? Why aren't whites called “people of non-colour” then? Or “people of no-colour”?

Black and white are just words. They're quick and easy terms to use for those who want or need to indicate skin colour and they're neutral. People (like Ms Rhule perhaps) who want to take offence at one (and not the other) always will. But they're misguided. Countering racism is always worth doing. But cranking up and maintaining raw nerves unnecessarily does no-one any good. It just increases division between black and white and injects a zealous, scolding tone into debate which would benefit from more freedom, less 'sensitivity' and - in a case like the Schiffer/Lagerfeld photos - a bit of playfulness.

Oh, Unkle Karl is quaking in his stacked heels, with the fear, of what I think, I know.

But. The fact that it does not matter what I think, has never stopped me thinking before.

So, here goes…

Fresh from their “homage” to Annie Liebowitz on German Vogue, are 6 “new” collaborative covers for one magazine.

They’re shot by Lagerfeld and are of his long time muse, Claudia Schiffer.

They appear to be of Schiffer, in fancy dress.

They’re for the German Style quarterly Stern Fotografie, and are to mark it’s 60th issue.

Amongst other “iconic” looks, (something faintly Marie Antoinette-ish, Melanie Griffiths in working Girl? A girly version of the Cop from The Village People?) he’s shot Schiffer in …an afro and Blackface.

Just like half of fashionable Paris before him.

I’m sure no-one told him that Blackface wasn’t very clever, the first time round.

And as usual, doubt lurks in my mind: could there be something very clever that I am missing?

Bu in the fairy tale, they didn’t tell the Other Emperor that he wasn’t wearing any clothes, either.

05 Jul 10 Samsung R590 laptop for Russia

Samsung has presented its latest notebook of the R-series which was made for the Russian market and is named Samsung R590. The new unit is already available for purchase and is priced at approximately $950.

In the inside of the Samsung R590 you can find an Intel Core i5 processor that supports Intel Turbo Boost, as well as a nVidia GeForce GT 330M graphics card with 1GB. The screen size is set at 15.6-inches and a resolution of 1366×68 pixels and besides the DVD burner and WiFi, the special features include SuperSilent technology, Samsung Recovery Solution, and a USB port that can recharge a device even when the laptop is turned off.

I’ve often had bad things to say about Samsung televisions, with their strange controls and bizarre design, but these characteristics have worked in Samsung’s favor more than once, as is evidenced by the Samsung SMX-F43BN/XAA.

The Samsung SMX-F43BN/XAA camcorder boasts a 52x optical zoom with a whopping 2200x digital zoom to back it up, a 2.7 inch LCD monitor, digital image stabilization, face detection technology, night recording capability, a time lapse recording feature, two megapixel still camera mode, eight gigs of onboard memory with compatibility with Secure Digital memory cards, a USB port, and editing software.

It’s a pretty solid camcorder, right?  The range on the zoom is pretty nice, measuring in at a little better than a hundred feet by my admittedly loose estimate standards, and the controls are solid and easy to use besides.  And the price is, frankly, a little extra inducement to pick this one up.  It’s two hundred twenty bucks out at Best Buy, which is a pretty nice price no matter how you look at it.

The Samsung SMX-F43BN/XAA is a really nice overall camcorder that brings plenty of features in a compact and easy to use package.  If you’re in the market for a new one, this is definitely a good one to check out.

I taken Pictures in the last days - please tell me if you think they are good:

Photography props are expensive and many times are not even worth the investment. A Boppy Pillow however, even if bought at full price, is well worth the investment. You will get years of use from your Boppy Pillow and as a photography prop the Boppy Pillow can be used for babies and pets. The Boppy Pillow is also washable so it can be cleaned inbetween uses. You can purchase Boppy Pillows new at stores such as Target or used at resale shops and rummage sales.

Boppy Pillow Photography Prop Pose #1: Baby On Back
Place the Boppy Pillow on the floor of coffee table or other raised surface, not to high since you will be photographing from above. Cover the Boppy Pillow with a backdrop, blanket, material, etc. Gently rest the upper body of the baby on the Boppy Pillow, the baby's bottom should be near the open end. This position is perfect for newborns that can not support themselves.

Boppy Pillow Photography Pose #2: Baby on Tummy
Prepare the Boppy Pillow as above on a raised surface. For this pose the table can be high or low since you will be photographing from in front of the baby. For this photography pose you will be facing the open end of the Boppy Pillow away from the camera. This pose does require some upper body strength so it works best for babies 2 months and up. Place the baby stomach down with the upper body resting slightly forward of the Boppy Pillow. You now have a perfect head and shoulders position.

Boppy Pillow Photography Pose #3: Baby Sitting
Prepare the Boppy Pillow as described in pose 1. As in pose 2 the raised surface can be high or low since you will be photographing from in front of the baby. The Boppy Pillow opening should be facing the camera. Sit the baby inside the hole with the baby's legs coming out the opening. The Boppy Pillow will help support babies that can sit unassisted. In this pose the Boppy Pillow is mainly used to keep the baby sitting tall. Photograph the baby from the front. This pose will help you capture a nice head and shoulders photo of babies six months and up.

Boppy Pillow Photgraphy Pose #4: Pet Laying
Again prepare the Boppy Pillow as stated above. You will be photographing from in front of the subject so a high or low table will work. The Boppy Pillow opening should face to the left or right of the camera. Lay the pet with the front paws on the Boppy Pillow. The body should be laid into the center and if large enough out the opening. Stand behind the camera in front of the subject and get the pet to turn their head towards the camera. I use a rubber chicken, not a squeaker toy. A squeaker toy will scare most animals and usually makes a dog jump up and want to play. You only want to get the animal to look in your direction with their head.

I have included a couple of photos that show the Boppy Pillow in use.

There are two main reasons linked to archives that have allowed photography to attain the noble level of the museum of fine art.

On the one hand, the artists of the historical avant-gardes used photography as a medium that could touch a wider public than that of art, via the mass media. A number of their protagonists, such as Hannah Höch, Laszlo Moholy-Nagy or Alexander Rodchenko, among others, secretly kept archives of photographs.

On the other hand, museums of fine art started to highlight works by photographers who were aspiring to constitute archives through their photographic documents. Eugène Atget is the first in this lineage. His work inventorying Old Paris served as a model for Walker Evans and Berenice Abbott. In the post-war era the “inventory” of the German population at the time of the Weimar Republic by August Sander was an example for Bernd & Hilla Becher in particular. All these photographers were involved in what Walker Evans calls the “documentary style”, one of the characteristics of which is in fact the ambition to set up an archive. Today, the nature of the photographic archive interests a growing number of photographers and artists. Confronted with the avalanche of photographs produced daily, more and more producers of images are becoming archivists-iconographers.

LA REVANCHE DE L'ARCHIVE PHOTOGRAPHIQUE takes stock of this infinitely rich field that resonates closely with “Visual Culture”. By considering the period from the 1970s to the present day, it reconnects with the spirit of the avant-gardes and also shows a range of works that are all closely or distantly related to political art or art policy.

This show goes beyond the framework of a conventional exhibition of photographs. It offers not only a broadening outside the field of contemporary art, by including stances reflecting political militancy, anthropology or photo-reportage, and also showing photographic productions from the most varied points of view.

LA REVANCHE DE L'ARCHIVE PHOTOGRAPHIQUE constitutes the central focus of the 50JPG festival (50 Jours pour la photographie à Genève), a triennial devoted to photography initiated by the Centre de la photographie Genève in 2003. Each triennial uses photography to question a contemporary set of problems. After REPRÉSENTATION DU TRAVAIL/TRAVAIL DE REPRÉSENTATION in 2003 and PHOTO-TRAFIC in 2006, the 3rd edition is focusing on the theme of the photographic archive.

Around its keynote exhibition LA REVANCHE DE L'ARCHIVE PHOTOGRAPHIQUE, the Centre de la photographie Genève brings together about thirty institutions, art galleries and alternative spaces in the region that are staging photographic exhibitions. These come within the thematic scope of photographic archives (IN section), or offer photographic exhibitions outside that theme (OFF section).

The festival 50JPG also includes :
• a symposium “From one archive to another”, organized with the Haute école d'art et de design – Genève, on 4 – 5 June
• a portfolioreview FOTOBILD set up for the first time in Geneva on 12 – 14 June (registrations on www.fotobild-berlin.de/registration)
• screenings and lectures
